The Fifth Smart DC Facility Technology Summit, themed as "Smart DC, Building the Future", was successfully held in Dongguan, with more than 500 experts, analysts, and customers from global top consulting companies, operators, designing institutes, and industry associations attended.

At the summit, the analysis and discussions focused on the development and construction trends of global DCs, the challenges brought by the requirements for the computing power in the 5G era, and the new trend of technology development. Huawei, together with customers, industry associations, designing institutes, upstream and downstream partners, universities and colleges, and scientific research institutes, launched the first "Smart DC" program for innovation research in the DC Energy domain. The program is to build a platform featuring knowledge sharing, industry enablement, and ecosystem cooperation to facilitate sustainable and healthy development of the industry.

"Those who produce parachutes should try them out first": Huawei is not only a solution provider, but also a practitioner.

Lilia Severina, Global Director of Uptime Institute, shared the "Global DC Development and Construction Trends" at the summit. She pointed out that DC market is now thriving with such services as 5G, blockchain, and cloud, and there will be more and more smart DCs.

Zhong Jinghua, Deputy Chief Engineer of China Electronics Engineering Design Institute (CEEDI), believes that DCs are fundamental to the process of informatization, and data has become an indispensable element for industrial and social development, with data defining the innovative future.

Zhou Taoyuan, President of Huawei Network Energy Product Line, said that Huawei has integrated ICT, cloud, big data, IoT, AI, and power electronics technologies to provide green, smart, and reliable DC solutions based on customer requirements and application scenarios, leading the industry transformations and helping customers and partners achieve business success.

He Bo, President of Huawei DC Energy Domain, pointed out in his keynote speech "Smart DC, Building the Future" that Huawei has always been committed to leading the industry, and has been an innovative leader in terms of DC energy. So far, Huawei has proposed the "Modular + Intelligentization" and four types of AI-powered reconstructions to maximize the energy value of DCs. Huawei is not only a solution provider, but also a practitioner. Adhering to the principle that "Those who produce parachutes should try them out first", Huawei uses its cloud data center as a joint innovation platform and trail site to test its innovative technologies and solutions for continuous optimization. Huawei also sticks to joint innovation with customers to keep the technologies and solutions updated to provide better solutions and lead the market.

"Smart DC" program: To build an industry environment featuring innovation, openness, and cooperation through platform openness and resource capability sharing, with innovative technology as the core

By continuous innovation, Huawei has not only achieved continuous breakthroughs in products and technologies, but also put continuous efforts to promote the sustainable and healthy development of the industry. Huawei, together with customers, industry associations, designing institutes, upstream and downstream partners, universities and colleges, and scientific research institutes, launched the "Smart DC" program. This is the first cooperative program for innovation research in the DC energy industry, in which "1+3 initiative" is proposed: A win-win industrial system and an innovative, open, and cooperative industry environment will be built with innovation research as the core and the three actions of knowledge sharing, industry enablement, and ecosystem cooperation. At the summit, 5G-Oriented Edge DC Facility White Paper was released, providing theoretical support for the 5G edge DC facility.

Getting to Know Cutting-Edge DC Technologies

Transformation is the key to driving industry progress. At the summit, Dr. Zhang Xiaofei, Director of Huawei Network Energy Product Line Architecture & Design Department, demonstrated his research achievements and their verification tests, including how Huawei helps customers reduce initial investment by integrating power electronics and electrochemistry to achieve low current imbalance and the mixing use of old and new lithium batteries.

He also demonstrated how Huawei’s iCooling, an intelligent cooling technology, reduces power consumption of DCs by using the deep neural network to automatically deduce system parameters under the optimal power usage effectiveness (PUE) to improve the overall efficiency of the cooling system; how hardware upgrading and AI application break the space and time limits, extend the natural cooling time and expand the application area of vapor cooling in the exploration of indirect evaporative cooling technology.

Emerging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, and IoT are becoming commercialized and materialized, ushering in a smart society where everything is sensing, connected, and intelligent. In the future, Huawei will closely work with industry partners to create a better future of DCs, and enjoy the shared success in the era of network energy development with a more open mind.
