Among the world’s largest builders of digital infrastructure, the use of carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates have proven popular as a way to ‘greenify’ companies’ energy use. However, whilst both offsets and RECs play a crucial role in reducing the sector’s carbon footprint, both instruments have come under scrutiny for placing less emphasis on in-house emission reduction, investment in non-verified credits and the double counting of credits.
