Amazon's $8.5 billion acquisition of US media company MGM has closed.

The acquisition of the house of James Bond was primarily focused on bolstering its Prime Video division, but also secures another cloud contract for Amazon Web Services (AWS).

MGM began working with AWS in 2020, signing a multi-year deal with the cloud company to modernize its supply chain.

“MGM is reinventing its media supply chain in the world’s leading cloud, leveraging AWS’s unmatched functionality and scalability to more effectively deliver its vast library of content to existing and new TV and viewer platforms,” Greg Pearson, VP of Worldwide Commercial Sales at Amazon Web Services said at the time.

“We look forward to expanding our work together to continue to drive innovation across this supply chain and deliver improved customer experiences to audiences around the world.”

But the contract was only focused on a specific part of MGM's operations. The company appears to use in-house data center compute for the rest of its core businesses.

The company operates a data center on one floor of its Santa Monica headquarters, that Archinect notes "handles all corporate data functions, provides mainframe services for MGM animation developers, and houses MGM’s IT staff." The 15,000 square foot (1,400 sqm) data center is operated by IBM.
