Amazon’s Irish data center arm has increased its pre-tax profits to $44.51 million (€39.46m) in the last year.

Accounts released by Amazon Data Services Ireland Ltd (ADSIL) show a 30.5 percent increases in pre-tax takings in the AWS regional subsidiary, and a 49 percent jump in profits company-wide.

Globally Amazon raked in $232.9bn last year, helping founder and CEO Jeff Bezos retain his title as world’s richest man for two years running.

The five directors of the subsidiary saw their salaries go up by three percent, rising from $1.39m to $1.83m as well as shares-based awards of $1.16m.

ADSIL gained 182 employees over the last year, expanding from a staff of 1,189 to 1,371.

The subsidiary operates several data centers in the Dublin area. In January of last year, ADSIL secured planning permission for the first building in a proposed €1 billion ($1.2bn) data center project in north Dublin. The company aims to build up to eight data centers on the site in Dublin as part of “Project G,” its largest data center campus in Ireland.

Following negotiations between company representatives and the Irish government, which looked at amendments to the country’s planning laws for large data centers.

Amazon is thought to have suggested that the authorization process be fast-tracked for facilities of more than 10,000 square meters (107,640 sq ft), on sites spanning 15 hectares or more.
