The data, first spotted by The Register, does not provide specific details about the semiconductors produced.

The news follows China's largest contract chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC), posting revenue growth of more than 43 percent to $1.34 billion - despite US sanctions.

Other Chinese semiconductor companies have not been as successful - in July, a creditor for Tsinghua Unigroup asked a court to begin bankruptcy proceedings for the Chinese semiconductor company.

China became the world's largest purchaser of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in 2020, and is also the world's largest importer of semiconductors.

In February, Bloomberg reported that China was stockpiling chips and chip-making machines to insulate it from widening US sanctions.

In June, Chinese President Xi Jinping appointed his economic czar as a new 'chip czar.'

Liu He will oversee the country's efforts to design and manufacture semiconductors within China, as part of a broader trillion dollar tech initiative.
