India’s IT infrastructure management firm CtrlS Datacenters has brought its latest data center online in Bangalore (Bengaluru), the capital of Karnataka state.

The facility is the company’s fourth to come online, with other sites in Chennai, Mumbai, and Noida. In addition to the new site, the company promises to invest another 500m rupees ($77.25m) by 2021 to build new data centers in Hyderabad and Mumbai.

The data center is also the world’s first to receive the US Green Building Council’s LEED platinum certification, a rating system designed to evaluate the environmental performance of a building.

Skateboarding shoes brand Vans obtained the certification for its new headquarters in California, as did New York’s JFK airport, and the 2018 Super Bowl stadium in Minnesota.

Ctrls now employs 1,800 qualified technical staff in its data centers across the country, with the company’s chairman, Sridhar Pinnapu Reddy, stating that the latest facility could employ up to 400 new technical staff within the next 18 months, as reported by TheNewsMinute.

However, this seems unlikely, as data centers tend to require a minimal number of technicians and engineers, and operate in large part with no need for human intervention.

The facility is hoped to address the country’s increasing reliance on data collection, as the 1.32bn inhabitant country strives to develop its digital infrastructure, with the introduction of programs such as the controversial Aadhaar database containing all of India’s residents’ biometric and demographic information, and the country’s Prime Minister Modi’s aspiration to create a cashless economy.
