Data centers and telecoms are colliding at the edge of the network

IT systems in data centers are converging with the networks underlying the cloud, to create new opportunities at the edge of the network, according to Pablo Jejcic.

”Today we see edge data centers sitting between the data center space and the real edge of the telecommunication network,” said Pablo Jejcic, head of Vodafone’s cloud and infrastructure center of excellence, in an interview at the DCD Zettastructure event in London in November. ”We want to push compute and storage out to the base station, to the last mile before your house.”

The process creates a more cloud-native space for the telecom applications, at the same time as moving IT applications further into the cloud, he said.
