Internet exchange operator DE-CIX is now offering its interconnection and cloud services in Sines, Portugal.
The IX will be hosted at Start Campus’ Sines DC facility outside Lisbon.
Start Campus’ Sines DC recently secured additional power, bringing its total potential IT capacity to 1.2GW.
The first building, with an initial capacity of 14MW, is expected to be operational in Q4 2024. The remaining five buildings are expected to all be operational by 2030.
The new Point of Presence (PoP) at the carrier-neutral facility will support the digitization of local companies by providing access to interconnection and cloud connectivity, said DE-CIX.
“Welcoming DE-CIX to our Sines DC is a significant milestone and testimony of the growing importance of Sines as a connectivity hub,” said Robert Dunn, CEO at Start Campus. “Now customers will be able to have access to the world’s leading neutral Internet exchange operator and largest interconnection ecosystem at our premises, ensuring local traffic remains local, and global data is routed more efficiently.”
Theresa Bobis, regional director of southern Europe at DE-CIX, added: “Sines is poised to become a crucial hub for multiple subsea systems interconnecting and serving Southern Europe, with enhanced reach to Africa and other European markets, including North and South America. Expanding our Southern European footprint to Sines enhances connectivity for Portugal and beyond.”
DE-CIX offers a carrier-neutral interconnection platform for international networks, hosted in various colocation facilities. It does not own any data centers of its own, but locates its platform with providers such as Kio Data Centers in Mexico, Digital Realty, and Equinix.
Last year, the IX operator formed a joint venture with PT IDMarco Digital Solusis to expand its presence to Jakarta, Indonesia.
Located on the southwestern edge of Europe, Sines is currently home to the EllaLink cable and landing station, with the Medusa, New CAM Ring, Nuvem, and Olisipo cables set to land in the next two years.
Equinix, AtlasEdge, Claranet, and Tata Communications all have a presence in the wider Lisbon area.
