EdgeConneX has broken ground on a new Edge data center facility in the Sant Boi de Llobregat region of Spain.

The new 7,600 sq m (81,800 sq ft), 8.4MW carrier-neutral facility known as EDCBCN01 is located just from Barcelona city center and scheduled to go live at the end of 2021. It will have two data halls of 1,700 sq m each.

“We are continuing our push to bring the Edge closer to those that need it most, where they need it most. It's a client-centric philosophy that runs company-wide and takes us to places like Barcelona where we, alongside our technology partners and community leaders, can have an immediate and positive impact on overall business opportunity and edge market growth,” said Dick Theunissen, EMEA MD, at EdgeConneX.

The N+1 data center facility will provide businesses in the region with local cloud and content access as well as colocation services. EdgeConneX says it will be a carbon neutral facility employing renewable energy but doesn’t provide details. The company says it has secured a ‘global IT services provider and systems integrator’ as its first anchor tenant.

“The Sant Boi region, Barcelona and all of Europe is in position to be the next great digital hub,” adds Lluïsa Moret Sabidó, mayor of Sant Boi de Llobregat. “The EdgeConneX data center facility will not only provide necessary local access and connectivity to cloud and content providers for our growing business community but will provide new jobs and opportunities, continuing to lift our local and regional economy.”

In January, EdgeConneX announced a new Edge data center in Santiago, Chile. The company also recently announced a new joint venture in India with Adani Enterprise to develop 1GW of data center capacity in the country over the next 10 years, including both Edge and Hyperscale facilities.
