Brazilian data center firm Elea has acquired two data centers from IT services firm DXC Technology.
BNAmericas and other local press this week reported that the Piemonte Holding-owned company has acquired DXC facilities in Barueri and São Bernardo do Campo, in Greater São Paulo, as well as adjacent land.
Discussions over the deal have reportedly been ongoing since the second half of last year. Elea is to invest R$300 million ($53.9m) in the purchase and upgrade of the two data centers.
The company has also reportedly approved a R$5 billion ($900 million) investment plan for the São Bernardo site to increase its capacity from 5 to 100MW, adding two extra buildings on a 68,000 sqm (731,945 sq ft) site. The first phase and the first new building, totaling 50MW, is expected to be delivered in 2025.
“São Bernardo do Campo was the automotive cradle of Brazil, and it is no longer. There is power infrastructure built and well established and no longer used. We want to open a new leg, a new hub, in São Paulo by leveraging there,” Piemonte Holding CEO and Elea founder, Alessandro Lombardi, told BNamericas.
Elea was founded by Piemonte Holding in 2019, and in 2021 was invested in by Goldman Sachs Asset Management. The company has seven data centers across Brasília (two), Curitiba, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Porto Alegre (two). It has previously acquired data centers from TIM, Globo, and Oi.
Elea’s existing SP01 data center in São Paulo spans 1,995 sqm (21,474 sq ft) in the Santo Amaro area of the city. It was one of five acquired from struggling telco Oi in 2021.
Update:
The company has since announced the acquisition of two data centers. The two sites, located in São Bernardo do Campo (SPO2) and the Tamboré region (SPO3), have a current combined power capacity exceeding 10MW.
Elea said the move was part of a 120MW, $1 billion strategic expansion plan.
Lombardi said: "One of the data centers Elea is acquiring is in the heart of the former Brazilian automotive cluster, São Bernardo do Campo, where gigawatts of available energy are readily accessible. I am excited to lead this initiative of starting a new data center cluster in São Paulo."
