Colocation provider Equinix will acquire Switch Datacenters' AMS1 data center business in Amsterdam, Netherlands for $34 million (€30m) in cash.

The data center campus will be Equinix's 9th facility in Amsterdam and 11th in the Netherlands. The facility is a leased assets, with Equinix acquiring the business and the lease from Switch.

AMS1 currently offers 89,500 square feet (8,320 sq m) of total floor space and enjoys direct connections to the NL-IX and the Amsterdam Internet Exchange.

Equinix will rename the facility to AM11 and plans to build out the facility with 700 cabinets. The site could potentially expand into an adjacent building, adding 1,300 cabinets.

Last June, Switch Datacenters expanded the campus adding 18,300 square feet (17,000 sq m) of white space. The facility is fitted with 2N redundant power equipment as well as the company’s patented adiabatic systems, which it claims can provide a PUE of 1.04.

Switch Datacenters is an Amsterdam based colocation provider that focuses on the retail market as well as wholesale colo. The company should not be confused with US-based Switch or the London-headquartered Global Switch. It operates two other data centers in Amsterdam/
