MDXi was originally launched in 2019 as a MainOne subsidiary for its West African colocation services. Equinix acquired MainOne in 2021 for $320 million, along with its MDXi unit.

The company is headed up by CEO Funke Opeke, who had previously served roles at Verizon and MTN Nigeria, before founding MainOne in 2015.

MDXi operates five data centers across West Africa in the Ivory Coast (x2), Ghana, and Nigeria (x2). Its second Ivory Coast facility launched at the end of last year on the outskirts of Abidjan. Its first Ivory Coast facility is a prefab module, offering capacity for 100 racks.

Equinix is also developing a 4MW data center facility in Johannesburg, South Africa.
