Ethio telecom has opened a new data center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The state-owned operator this week inaugurated a modular data center provided by Huawei in the Gola Sefer area of the capital city.

The new facility – which is replacing an existing one – is built to Tier-III standards and is capable of holding up to 800 servers.

It will initially provide the company extra capacity for existing services such as mobile money and business support systems, as well as new business such as colocation and cloud services in the future.

Huawei and ZTE are the main telecoms network equipment suppliers to Ethio Telecom. The company said Huawei delivered the data center within two and a half months, and has a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.4.

Ethiopia's telecommunications regulator last week awarded a mobile operating license to a consortium led by Kenya's Safaricom, Vodafone, and Japan's Sumitomo.

Ethiopia’s capital is seeing a surge in data center developments. Earlier this year Raxio broke ground on a 3MW facility in Addis Ababa’s ICT Park. Wingu.Africa and RedFox are also developing facilities in the same park.
