Facebook’s third data center on the Los Lunas campus in New Mexico is up and running.

This latest opening marks the halfway point on a plan to build six facilities. According to Facebook, the construction work on the entire campus should be finished in 2023.

Albuquerque Business First originally reported the news but several jobs have since been listed on Facebook's website for new engineers and supervisors at the Los Lunas facility.

Los Lunas and tax

The campus represents a $1bn investment and derives most of its power from renewable power companies based out of New Mexico.

Facebook picked the Los Lunas site in 2016. Local utility provider PNM previously applied for a power purchase agreement to deliver 60MW to 100MW of solar and wind power, so that the facility can run on renewables “to the greatest extent practicable.”

The site was picked due to lucrative concessions given to the social media and advertising company, including being exempt from any property taxes for the next 30 years. Facebook will also receive tax breaks on the considerable cost of computer equipment.
