Italian telco Fastweb has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Norwegian energy company Statkraft to procure solar power in Italy.
The two companies have signed an exclusive 12-year agreement covering the output of a photovoltaic plant to be constructed in the region of Lazio, Province of Latina, which will cover 13 percent of Fastweb's demand.
The new 11.25MW solar plant will produce 19GWh of renewable electricity every year exclusively for Swisscom-owned Fastweb. The solar park will be operational in 2023.
“The supply of renewable energy is one of the crucial elements to achieve the ambitious goals we set ourselves to become Carbon Neutral by 2025 and the agreement with Statkraft helps to make our green strategy even more solid and helps us to be independent from an energy point of view,” said Ernesto Bonalumi, technology officer of Fastweb.
Founded in 1999, the telco operates one data center in Rome and another in Milan. Its fiber network spans more than 32,000 km (20,000 mi) and its 5G mobile service covers more than 1,700 municipalities.

This year Statkraft has signed PPAs with Deutsche Telekom and Microsoft.
