A Florida fire department is getting a new fire station and data center.
The grand opening of the new Fire Rescue Station 50 facility is set for April 28, consisting of a new fire station and emergency operations data center for the City of Marco Island.
The fire station and data center is located at 1280 San Marco Road, Marco Island.
The facility was built over a year and a half by Manhattan Construction Group in a contract worth ~$12.5 million, and designed by BSSW Architects. The data center has been built to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. The data center itself is around 253 sq ft and features five 42U racks.
The original Fire Rescue Station 50 was built in 1992, also serving as the Marco Island City Hall and the emergency operations center during severe storms. During 2017, Hurricane Irma nearly flooded the building, forcing firefighters to evacuate and resulting in a grant from FEMA Hazard Mitigation to partially fund the reconstruction. The new build was further funded by Collier County's temporary one-cent sales tax for infrastructure builds.
According to the City of Marco Island’s website, the city’s IT is distributed between 12 different physical locations in the city and on Marco Island’s shores, with the city’s main data center located at the Fire Station.
Earlier this year, EdgeConneX announced it was planning a third data center in Miami, Florida, adding to the company’s existing 9MW of capacity in the state. Last year also saw the acquisition or launch of data centers in the state by CoreSite, StratCap, and EdgePresence.
