Online-payment company PayPal will also migrate key portions of its infrastructure to the new region. According to PayPal, it selected the new Salt Lake City region due to its proximity to its existing deployment in Aligned Energy's data center in West Jordan, Utah.

PayPal’s VP of Employee Technology and Experiences and Data Centers, Dan Torunian, said: "Expanding our relationship with Google Cloud gives us access to new features and capabilities that help us manage seasonal surges in payment transactions and reduce regional expansion costs and complexities."

Build-out

Google has invested heavily in its US data centers and offices over the past few years, with the company promising $10bn in infrastructure spend this year, slightly down from $13bn spend last year.

The 2020 investments will be focused on 11 states: Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and California.
