Cloud service provider IONOS plans to build a data center on a business park in Worcester, UK, after receiving planning permission from local authorities.

Wychavon District Council approved the plans offered by IONOS’s developer Stoford for the scheme at the Worcester Six Business Park.

The data center’s plot will consist of 51,479 sq ft (4,780 sq m) and a total of 38,501 sq ft of IT space for IONOS and its subsidiary Fasthosts.

Edward Peel, development manager at Stoford, said: "The approval for the IONOS development will bring another world-class operator to Worcester Six, which recognizes the strategic location, excellent infrastructure links, and talented workforce that businesses can draw upon."

Achim Weiss, IONOS chief executive, added: "We are thrilled to start construction of the Worcester Six data center soon. The demand for cloud services has been growing even more in these difficult times and with our new site, we will be able to provide a variety of hosting computing, and storage solutions to customers across the UK. We are very grateful that Wychavon District Council has approved our application so quickly."

The data center company filed plans for the facility back in August. It is hoped Stoford will be able to complete the project by August 2021 and IONOS expects to bring it online by January 2022.

IONOS and Fasthosts will gradually move 10,000 servers from its current offices in Gloucester, 30 miles (48 kilometers) away, to the new data center at Worcester Six.
