Microsoft is planning to build two data centers in San Jose, California.

The Mercury News reports the company has floated preliminary plans for a new data center campus on land it bought last year.

“The preliminary proposal only included a project scope to construct two five-story data center buildings” near the corner of Component Drive and Orchard Parkway, Jonathan Fox, a city planner told the publication.

Microsoft bought the plot in May 2021. The company acquired around 21 acres of undeveloped land for $78 million on the corner of Orchard Parkway and Component Drive. The site was bought from LBA Realty in an all-cash deal.

LBA Realty has retained an adjacent site and is planning a mixed-use village of offices, hotel rooms, and retail uses.

In 2017, the company bought 64.5 acres in the city along State Route 237 for $73.2 million. One of the proposals the company put forward was for a 436,880 square foot (40,587 sqm), 49.5MW data center. It seems the land hasn’t yet been developed.
