US data center firm Netrality has bought a warehouse and office building in Shawnee, Kansas City, and has requested bonds from the city council to pay for redevelopment.

First reported by BizJournal, Netrality is applying to Shawnee City Council for $36 million in federally taxable private activity revenue bonds in order to finance construction materials, fixtures, equipment, and labor to renovate 7801 Nieman Road.

At a Sept. 27 Shawnee City Council meeting, the master resolution for the project passed 6-0 for the issuance of Federally Taxable Private Activity Revenue Bonds in a principal amount of $56.2 million in multiple phases for the overall project. The council met yesterday and approved the bonds.

According to previous brochures, 7801 Nieman Rd was built in 1998 and sits on nearly 11 acres of land in the Nieman Business Park. The two-story building totals 175,737 sq ft (16,300 sqm); a mixture of the warehouse, production, and office space totaling 132,691 sq ft (12,300 sqm) on the first floor, and a second-floor 43,091 sq ft (4,000 sqm) call center (with space to expand by 9,872 sq ft/900 sqm).

Netrality currently has one data center in Kansas City at 1102 Grand Blvd. The company acquired the 156,117 sq ft facility in 2012.

Netrality has not officially announced any plans for a new data center in the Kansas City area. BizJournal reports that Netrality officials did not respond to requests for comment.
