Latvian telecoms operator Tet has announced plans to invest €1.4 million ($1.7 million) into its data center business and expand its Riga-based 1.4MW Dattum data center.

The company says it plans to add 60 additional racks and will finish the project later in 2021. Its Dattum data center opened in 2013 and is the only Uptime Institute-certified Tier III data center in Latvia, both for Design and Construction.

In a statement announcing the investment, Tet’s acting CEO Uldis Tatarčuks said the company had seen a four percent and 10 percent increase in data center and cloud services turnover respectively in 2020 compared to 2019 despite the Covid-19 pandemic, and almost 80 percent of Tet data center resources are already filled.

As part of the expansion, the company says it will look to implement an energy efficiency solution to the facility’s PUE.

“The European Commission has set a goal to make Europe's data centers climate-neutral by 2030. Therefore, by expanding the data center, we will pay special attention to energy-efficient cooling systems with the lowest possible PUE level,” said Maris Sperga, Tet Data Center Business Development Director.

Previously known as Lattelecom and still majority-owned by the Latvian Government, Tet is the largest data center service provider in Latvia and manages five data centers totaling around 4.7MW of power capacity.

In 2019, Amazon Web Services set up subsidiaries in Latvia and Estonia as it mulled opening a cloud region in the Baltics. It has yet to announce any facilities, however.
