The 4,600km Australia Singapore Cable has broken.

Operator Vocus has managed to restore some services following the initial outage, but the Perth segment of the cable remains impacted. Traffic is being rerouted via other cables.

Vocus Communications said that the break occurred at 08:39 AEST on Sunday 1 August. The cause of the cable break has yet to be determined, but is often due to ships dropping anchor in restricted areas.

The break happened about 18km from Perth Landing station, the cable's only landing site for the Australian mainland.

The rest of the cable, which travels through Christmas Island, Jakarta, and Singapore, is still operational. Vocus improved the latency on that segment on Monday 2 August, following the break.

Vocus is rerouting protected Ethernet services, IP Transit, and Internet services through other cables, which would increase latency.

As of Monday, Vocus is waiting on permits to access the break area. "Concurrently, detailed plans are being developed to perform the restoration," the company said.

It added: "Vocus' submarine cable maintenance partners confirmed a ship and crew are available nearby."

The company expects to provide an update by 17:00 AEST on Wednesday 4 August 2021.
