Wipro has won a $44.5 million contract to provide data center services to the National Grid.

The UK-headquartered electricity and gas utility company owns and operates electricity and natural gas transmission networks in the UK, while in the northeastern US it operates transmission networks and produces and supplies electricity and gas.

The five-year contract is spread out over four lots of colocation, managed services, mainframes, and data center migration. It includes options for two one-year extensions.

The Indian IT services company will be required to provide facilities to host IT hardware including facilities management, monitoring, and security; managed services to care for operations of servers and cloud assets (including patching, licensing, and compliance); mainframe hosting and management; and an 18-month data center migration program (presumably to cloud architectures).

The London Stock Exchange-listed company said it was “looking to deliver next-generation capabilities” around its data centers and networks in order to provide “reliable services to the business.”

“Operationally it’s key that National Grid achieves improved service delivery speed, scalability, and flexibility delivered through the optimization of data center footprint, automation of operations, and the developing and implementing hybrid cloud architectures that meet National Grid’s current needs and can flex to meet our future needs,” the company said.
