xFusion of China has teamed with GaN Systems to set a power density record for data center power supply units.

The PSU, from xFusion, uses gallium nitride chips from GaN Systems to deliver a power density of 100W per cubic inch. The 3kW power supply has a 96 percent efficiency rating under the 80 Plus certification scheme, giving it a Titanium rating. GaN-Based PSUs enable data centers to increase revenue and reduce operating costs and carbon footprints.

The product, which measures 68mm x 183mm x 40.5mm, can be built into rack-mounted data center kit and should make it more efficient. It delivers 12V output from muliple input levels.

“Customers implementing GaN Systems’ power semiconductors in their PSUs are seeing a continual increase in PSU power density from 45W/in3 to 63/in3, 82/in3, and now to 100W/in3," said Jim Witham, CEO of GaN Systems. "With these power density breakthroughs and efficiency improvements, the value proposition of GaN is undeniable, and we will see more PSU companies offering these solutions.”

GaN offers higher power densities than alternatives, offering up to twice the power density of traditional PSUs, offering a smaller package that also has a lower power loss than traditional MOSFETs. The technology is gaining ground in data center PSUs, and GaN Systems claims that switching 10 racks of servers to GaN-based PSUs could deliver $3 million more profits, reducing costs and CO2 emissions by more than 100 metric tons per year. Companies designing with GaN are doubling the power density of legacy PSUs, reaching power densities up to 100W/in3 with 96+ percent efficiency, resulting in power supplies half the size and half the power loss compared to silicon-based power supplies.
