Data center rack density has significantly increased over the past decade. According to the 2020 State of the Data Center report, the average rack density jumped to 8.2 kW / rack, an increase of almost a kilowatt(kW) or 12% over the previous year. The rise of demand for AI applications and chip manufacturer boosting processing power is expected to push the power density in excess of 15 kW / rack by 2025. Such energy consumption growth is going to require a significant change in cooling technology.

Liquid cooling technology has come a long way in the past decade to potentially be the promising solution to the rising cooling needs. The improved heat transfer efficiency leads to significant energy reduction making it a welcome addition for both economic and environmental reasons. But migrating from the ubiquitous air cooling technology to liquid cooling will require data center engineers take a long-term view to the data center design that is flexible to incorporate new technologies. And a key area to consider is the liquid leak detection system to protect the rack and facility with risk of liquid leaks.
