At Computex in Taiwan, Nvidia unveiled its EGX Platform, which is aimed at bringing real-time artificial intelligence to the edge.

The platform claims to be a “hyperscale cloud-in-a-box" reference architecture, and comes in various sizes - from the tiny Nvidia Jetson Nano, up to a full rack of T4 servers. It combines Nvidia's AI technology with security, storage and networking technologies from Mellanox, a company which Nvidia is set to acquire for $6.9bn.

“Enterprises demand more powerful computing at the edge to process their oceans of raw data - streaming in from countless interactions with customers and facilities - to make rapid, AI-enhanced decisions that can drive their business,” Bob Pette, VP and GM of enterprise and edge computing at Nvidia, said.

“A scalable platform like Nvidia EGX allows them to easily deploy systems to meet their needs on premises, in the cloud or both.”

EGX server partners include Atos, Cisco, Dell EMC, Fujitsu, HPE, Inspur, Tyan and Lenovo, as well as server and IoT system makers Acer, Cloudian, Hitachi, Supermicro and Wiwynn.

The platform's software stack, Nvidia Edge Stack, connects to cloud IoT services, and users can remotely manage their service from AWS IoT Greengrass and Microsoft Azure IoT Edge.

“Nvidia EGX is what we are looking for to solve the current bottleneck of cloud computing, which offers a robust computing power to [artificial intelligence-powered Internet of Things] and any other smart devices," Danny Hsu, VP of Tyan, said.
