Dr Rabih Bashroush

Professor and Director, Enterprise Computing Research Lab, University of East London

Dr Bashroush is an international authority in the field of Cloud and Data Centres. He was named in the UK Universities top 100 Best Breakthrough list for his work on energy conservation in ICT and was the recipient for the Industry Initiative of the Year DCD Global Awards 2018.

He advises various governments on the topic including the UK, Ireland, and the European Commission, and has provided guidance on major public sector data centre and Cloud projects leading to major energy and environmental savings. His work has influenced various policies and legislation including the EU EMAS, GPP and Ecodesign legislation. He contributed to governmental expert reports in the UK (e.g. the UK All Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group report on the energy consumption of the Internet) and Europe (e.g. the expert report advising the EU Commission on future research challenges in data centre energy efficiency). Dr Bashroush serves on the main standardisation committees in the field including CEN/CENELEC/ETSI Coordination Group on Green Data Centres as well as the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1, SC39, Sustainability For and By IT.

In 2018, Dr Bashroush led the work for the European Commission DG CONNECT scientific committee that produced recommendations for the EU Framework Programme of funding (Horizon Europe) in the field of Connected European Facilities (CEF). In 2016, he was appointed as the coordinator of the EU DG CONNECT SmartCities Research Cluster.

Dr Bashroush has authored over 100 publications in top-tier journals and magazines (e.g. IEEE Transaction Sustainable Computing, IEEE Software, Journal of System and Software, ACM Computing Surveys, etc.), top-tier conferences (WICSA, ECSA,..), as well as professional media magazines. He is on the Editorial Board of the Elsevier Sustainable Computing journal, on the Steering Committee of the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing journal, and is a regular speaker on ICT and sustainability.
