The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has signed an agreement with Lenovo to install a supercomputer at the agency’s Hartree Centre in Daresbury, Cheshire.

The 44.7 petaflops Lenovo ThinkSystem Neptune system has ten times the processing power of the center’s current system, Scafell Pike. It will also use Lenovo’s direct water cooling solution to reduce the system’s energy demands by 40 percent, while boosting performance by up to 10 percent.

Scafell Pike is a BullSequana X1000 system containing Intel Skylake CPUs and Intel Xeon Phi accelerators. The new system will be GPU-based but no further information about the hardware has been provided.

The Hartree Centre is a high-performance computing, data analytics, and AI research facility that was founded in 2012 at Daresbury Laboratory, which is itself housed on the Sci-Tech Daresbury science and innovation campus.

The unnamed system forms part of the Hartree Centre’s £210 million ($257.4m) Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation (HNCDI) program which provides UK industry partners with access to digital technologies and expertise as part of the AI Research Resource (AIRR).

The AIRR is a funding opportunity managed by the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) government body on behalf of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

A £30 million ($38m) supercomputing center at Daresbury Laboratory is currently under construction to house the new system.

The STFC is a UK-based government agency that carries out research in science and engineering; its Hartree Centre is part of the UKRI.
