British data center operator 4D will acquire and upgrade a Tier III data center in Crawley, West Sussex, previously owned by telecoms giant BT.

The site, now known as ‘4D Gatwick’, will serve as a dedicated colocation facility for businesses in the Crawley, Tonbridge, Horsham, Dorking and Brighton regions.

Will grow with time

The company will spend around £5m ($6.2m) over the next five years to improve the site, with a planned capacity of up to 400 racks and 3MW of power.

“Over the past eight years, we have built a reputation for reliability, great technical support and flexibility,” Jack Bedell-Pearce, managing director of 4D said.

“Demand for colocation services from both existing and prospective clients is such that the acquisition of a new data center was essential. 4D Gatwick will enable us to meet that demand and also to offer our colocation, connectivity and cloud services to the many successful businesses that are centered around Gatwick and Crawley and those in other major business centres in Sussex and the South-East.”

4D’s first data center, ‘4D Surrey,’ opened near West Byfleet in 2008. Since then, the company has focused on small to medium businesses across the South East.
