Airtel Nigeria has launched 5G services in Nigeria today (June 19).
In doing so, the operator becomes the third operator in the country to launch commercial 5G services.
Coverage is available initially in Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, with this to expand to more locations in the future.
In January of this year, Airtel secured 100MHz of spectrum in the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC’s) second 3.5GHz spectrum allocation process as the sole bidder in the auction. The operator then scooped 2×10MHz in the 2600MHz band a month later.
Airtel Nigeria is a subsidiary of India telecoms company Bharti Airtel and has over 60 million mobile subscribers in the country.
MTN was the first mobile operator to launch commercial 5G services in the country when it deployed the service in September while working with Ericsson.
Another operator, Mafab Communications, launched 5G services in January in the country's capital Abuja.
