Alibaba is slowly restoring access to its servers and data following a fire at a data center in Singapore.

In a status update shared by the company on September 16, Alibaba said: "The migration and restoration of the affected hardware and machineries is in progress as planned, and the remaining affected cloud products are gradually being restored."

The company noted that some of the hardware is in the "dangerous and blocked area of the building" preventing access, and that "some hardware and machineries require to be carefully dried in order to ensure data security."

The fire broke out on Tuesday, September 10, in Availability Zone C of Alibaba's Singapore region, inside Digital Realy's SIN11 data center.

Digital told DCD that the fire alarm was sounded at 7:45am local time and the fire was under control by 8:04pm. Local press suggested that the fire involved "lithium-ion batteries housed in battery rooms on the third floor of a four-story building."

An update from Alibaba at the time noted: "As of 1:46am, in response to local fire department's request, due to ongoing water spraying for fire fighting, the server room has started to experience water accumulation and leaks, posing a risk of electrical short circuits.

"An emergency power shutdown has been implemented for one of the server building[s] in Singapore Availability Zone C, while network services for other buildings in Availability Zone C have been gradually restored."

By September 12, the facility was declared stable by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

SIN11 Digital Loyang 1, located at 3 Loyang Way, was launched in 2016 and totals 17,000 sqm (183,000 sq ft) across four stories.

Companies including Lazada and ByteDance have also reportedly seen disruption as a result of the incident.
