Television and film production company Khara Inc. has migrated its operations and archival data to Wasabi Technologies cloud storage.

Known for the Evangelion anime series, Khara has migrated 500TB of archival data from on-premises storage to the cloud.

According to the company, the migration has saved Khara around 80 percent in management and operations costs related to the data, while the infrastructure cost remains more or less the same.

"A major advantage of Wasabi cloud storage is that it frees us from frequent HDD failures and hardware replacements, allowing us to concentrate on system administration work," said Kazuki Misawa, chief system engineer at Khara Inc. "Repeated failures with our hardware increased the risk of losing irreplaceable data, and the fear of this happening kept me awake at night, as the large amount of data in each hard disk made replacement a nerve-wracking chore and replacing and rebuilding data on a single disk would often take one or two weeks."

The 500TB migrated includes a vast archive of image and video files generated over Khara's 18-year history, and continues to grow with every new production.

In addition to removing the stress of managing its own hardware, storing the archive in the cloud means the data can be accessed from any of Khara's production sites.

In January of this year, Wasabi acquired Curio AI, including its intellectual property. The acquisition has enabled Wasabi to use Curio AI's technology as part of its storage offering for the media and entertainment industry, giving video stored in Wasabi AI-generated second-by-second indexing and metadata, making it easier to find footage in massive stores.

Wasabi counts Liverpool Football Club among its customers, with the team migrating to Wasabi in March 2023. The majority of the club's IT service delivery is to subscribers via streaming such as its LFC TV service which broadcasts 24/7 footage.

Wasabi Technologies was founded in 2017 by David Friend and Jeff Flowers, focusing solely on cloud storage offerings.
