According to Lowyat, the first project will be built out in multiple phases and will be overseen by the Sepang Municipal council.

Other parties such as Asima Architects, Sunway Constructions, and Landarc Associates are also involved in the project.

Timelines and specifications of the facility remain unknown.

The report added that the same construction firm, Sunway Construction, secured an RM747.8 million ($170.8m) deal in March this year to build a data center for a US multinational tech corporation in Selangor. The work is scheduled for completion in Q2 2027.

It is not clear whether these two projects are related.

The tech giant first announced plans for a Malaysian cloud region in March last year. The region will include three availability zones and see the investment of $6 billion into the country by 2037.

AWS’ live cloud regions in APAC include Singapore, Jakarta, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, and Hong Kong. The company is also developing a new region in Thailand.

Earlier this month, the Malaysian Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation pledged to address sustainability issues in the data center industry.

Malaysia has seen significant data center investment over the last few years, taking the spillover from Singapore after the city-state imposed a moratorium in 2019 on data center development.

Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Cyberjaya are Malaysia’s three main data center hubs. Microsoft announced plans for a Malaysian Azure region in Kuala Lumpur in April 2021. This is still yet to open.

Google announced plans for a GCP region in Malaysia in August 2022 and a $2 billion investment earlier this year.

The Persiaran APEC dual-carriageway is also home to data center operator NTT.
