AWS has launched a new cloud region in Jakarta, Indonesia.
“The AWS Region in Jakarta, Indonesia, is now open and you can start using it today,” the company said in a blog post announcing the news. “The official name is Asia Pacific (Jakarta) and the API name is ap-southeast-3.”
As is standard with new regions, the Jakarta region has launched with three seperate availability zones.
First announced in April 2019, AWS at the time said the new region would support the country’s 'fast-growing startup ecosystem, large Indonesian enterprises, and government agencies.'
Jakarta is home to an Amazon CloudFront Edge location that was opened earlier this year, along with two AWS Direct Connect locations. The company said existing customers in the country include lifestyle app Traveloka and digital health startup Halodoc.
AWS is far from the only hyperscaler in town. Google completed work on its first Indonesian facility in Jakarta last year, while Alibaba is looking to build its third facility in the country before the end of the year. Tencent has recently opened a cloud region in the Jakarta area, while Microsoft announced plans for its first Azure cloud region in the country earlier this year. DCI Indonesia and Indonet’s Edge DC have both recently opened facilities in the Jakarta area.
Jakarta’s Cyber 1 data center was the scene of a fire earlier this month that killed two people.
