BBC iPlayer, the UK broadcaster's online streaming service, has gone down for some users just as England play Iran in the FIFA World Cup.

DownDetector is reporting a large number of problems for the streaming service, starting just before England kicked off their first game at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha in Qatar at 1 pm UK time.

None of the company's Twitter accounts have made a comment on the outage, with the most recent post from BBC Sport reading: "Watch on BBCOne and BBCiPlayer, listen on 5liveSport and follow updates on the BBC Sport app."

Update: BBC Sport tweeted: "We’re aware of an issue affecting some users on BBC iPlayer. We’re trying to fix this ASAP," and at half time host Gary Lineker apologized to impacted viewers.

Streaming services often struggle during major sporting events, which cause a surge in users to online platforms. Last year, ITV's ITV Hub went down several times, most notably during the England vs Denmark semi-final in the delayed Euro 2020 competition.

The outage also impacted podcast platform BBC Sounds. The UK's TV Licensing payment website, used to buy a license for the BBC, is also down. "Due to technical issues, our website is temporarily unavailable," the group said. "We are working hard to resolve the issue and would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

At the same time, the FIFA ticketing app reportedly crashed, meaning hundreds of England fans were stuck outside the stadium and missed the game's kick-off. FIFA said it was working on the issue.
