A Belarusian man climbed up on a cell tower in Vilnius, Lithuania, to protest his proposed deportation.

Named by local media as Igor Mikhailovich, the man scaled the cell tower yesterday (June 17).

Rescue services were called to Pilaitė, in the east of Vilnius.

“We have received a message from the man that he is on a mobile phone tower and that there is a risk to his life and health,” the Vilnius County chief police commissariat told LRT.lt.

While perched on the tower, Mikhailovich hung Belarus' historical flag used by the country’s opposition opposing the government of President Alexander Lukashenko.

He did eventually climb back down from the tower safely, with the local fire crew also on hand with trampolines, according to reports.

It's reported that Mikhailovich claims to have previously worked as a volunteer for a presidential candidate in Belarus, and due to the circumstances, he was currently working illegally in Lithuania.

He noted that the purpose of his protest was to obtain the appropriate documents so that he could “live and work in peace."

Belarus has been one of Russia's biggest supporters during its illegal invasion of Ukraine.
