The pan-Latin American data center provider said it had acquired a 15,000 sqm (161,000 sq ft) parcel of land, adjacent to its existing RIO1 facility.

The new plot of land, located in the São Cristovão neighborhood, will house a 60MW data center facility dubbed RIO2.

The company said the new facility will have access to an already established ecosystem of more than 50 network and cloud providers.

RIO2 is expected to be ready for service in 2026. Other specifications of the facility have yet to be shared.

Facundo Castro, CEO of Cirion Technologies, said: “This land acquisition supports the continued expansion of our data center campus in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting another important milestone in our expansion journey to grow our platform of low-latency, interconnected data centers.”

At the end of last year, the company announced plans to expand its São Paulo facility.

Cirion Technologies has three data center campuses across Brazil: São Paulo (SAO1), Rio de Janeiro (RIO1), and Curitiba (CUR1).

The company, spun out of Lumen and backed by the Stonepeak investment firm, is currently developing new data centers in Peru and Chile.

Earlier this year, Equinix announced plans to invest $94 million in a third data center in Rio de Janeiro.

Other operators in Rio de Janeiro include Ascenty, Scala, and Aligned. CloudHQ announced plans to develop a new data center campus in Rio de Janeiro, set to be operational in 2025.
