Continent 8 is to build another data center in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The company provides data center and hosting solutions to betting and other online gambling companies, and this will be its third facility in the city.
The company this week was granted permission by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) of New Jersey to ‘erect a 5,330 sq ft (495 sqm) modular addition’ on the exterior of the Atlantic City Convention Center.
During the meeting, the company reportedly indicated that business is booming, fueled by the growth of online sports betting. The company said the expansion would house a data center, built in Phoenix and assembled on site.
Atlantic City Press reports that the board approved the project, with one vote against. CRDA board member Edward Gant raised concerns about the modular design, saying it would mean wages would be going to workers out of city and/or state to where it was constructed.
Continent 8’s Atlantic City operation first opened in 2014. In 2018 the company opened a second specialized data center at the Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City, saying at the time it also announced plans for a third at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
The CRDA is a New Jersey state governmental agency founded in 1984 and responsible for directing the spending of casino reinvestment funds into projects for the benefit of Atlantic City and other areas of the state.
While it occupies space in a number of third party facilities globally, Continent 8 has its own data centers in markets such as Malta and Douglas on the Isle of Man. It recently opened a data center in Puerto Rico.
