Core42 - part of Abu Dhabi firm G42 - is building an AI supercomputer in Dallas, Texas.
Expected to be operational later this year, the Condor Galaxy 3 system (CG-3) will contain Cerebras WSE-3 chips, each of which contains 900,000 cores and is capable of achieving 125 petaflops of peak AI performance.
The system will also contain 12 petabytes of mass storage. The company didn't disclose which facility would be hosting the system.
CG-3 is the second Cerebras system utilized by Core42, which developed a bilingual Arabic and English language model called Jais on a subset of Cerebras's Condor Galaxy 1 supercomputer.
Core42’s parent company G42 first announced it would spend $900 million on the development of Jais in July 2023.
Core42 was founded in 2023 after G42 Cloud and G42 Inception AI merged.
Abu Dhabi-based G42 is an AI and cloud computing firm that offers solutions to the oil and gas sector, as well as government, healthcare, and finance. Headed up by Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the son of the founder of the UAE, the company’s current CEO is Peng Xiao a former DarkMatter employee.
G42 has allegedly developed surveillance tools for the UAE, while DarkMatter has been accused of being a state-surveillance-for-hire cybersecurity firm.
Last month, Microsoft invested $1.5 billion for a minority stake in G42. The companies said they will co-develop and deliver AI solutions with Microsoft Azure to various industries and markets across the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa.
Under the terms of the deal, G42 will make Jais available in the Azure AI model catalog.
