GPU cloud firm CoreWeave is to lease capacity from Swedish colocation provider EcoDataCenter.

The two companies this week announced a partnership to host “one of Europe’s first large-scale Nvidia Blackwell clusters” in Sweden.

CoreWeave said it will deploy thousands of Blackwell GPUs to help meet demand for large-scale AI infrastructure from leading AI labs and enterprises.

The clusters are set to be operational by early 2025. Further details of which EcoDataCenter facilities will be used or the total size of the deployments weren’t shared.

“This partnership with EcoDataCenter comes at a pivotal moment in CoreWeave’s expansion into Europe,” said Mike Mattacola, chief business officer of CoreWeave. “This deployment will enable us to support the growing demand for AI and high-performance computing across the continent, providing our clients with advanced processing power and efficiency.”

EcoDataCenter was formed in 2015 as a joint venture between local energy company Falu Energi & Vatten and data center operator EcoDC AB. Nordic real estate developer Areim took a majority stake in the firm via the Areim Fund III for around SEK 200 million ($22m) in 2018 and merged it with Swedish operator Fortlax in 2019.

The company currently operates five data centers across three sites in Falun, Piteå, and Stockholm. Earlier this year EcoDataCenter announced plans for a new 150MW campus, known as EcoDataCenter 2, in Östersund, Sweden. The campus will be constructed in phases, with the first 20MW completed in 2026.

“CoreWeave is one of the world’s most interesting companies. Being recognized for our design and engineering capabilities to host an Nvidia Blackwell cluster underscores our ability to handle the latest technology,” said Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter.

“We are proud to partner with CoreWeave and contribute to this groundbreaking project, which aligns with our mission to provide sustainable and high-performance data center solutions.”

Founded in 2017 and originally focused on crypto and blockchain applications, CoreWeave has invested heavily in its cloud offering, providing access to GPUs for AI applications. The company has raised $12bn in investment and debt in the last two years and plans to spend $3.5bn expanding into Europe.

CoreWeave has been on a major leasing spree in the last two years, and has said that it expects to operate 28 facilities by the end of 2024, up from 14 at the end of 2023. It has signed leasing deals with the likes of Lincoln Rackhouse, Chirisa, Flexential, TierPoint, Digital Realty, and Core Scientific for data centers across the US, including in Texas, Virginia, Georgia, and Oregon.

It is also expanding in Europe, with EdgeConneX a known provider in Spain. The company has previously said it is establishing facilities in Norway and the UK.

Update: This week also saw CoreWeave announce it is the first cloud provider to bring NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs to market.

The company also said it has completed nine new data center builds since the beginning of 2024, with 11 more in progress. The company expects to end the year with 28 data centers globally, with an additional 10 new data centers planned in 2025.
