Croatian ICT solutions provider Cratis is to open a new data center this month in Varazdin, north of Zagreb.

The company will soon be launching the facility in partnership with local polyethylene films, bags, and packaging manufacturer, Muraplast.

Known as DC North, the 2,000 sqm (21,525 sq ft) facility will offer 2.8MW across six data rooms – each 340 sqm hall hosts 96 racks – and operate with a PUE of 1.14. The company is working with Schneider, Perkings, Siemens, and Vertiv for the project.

First announced in early 2021, construction is now complete, and the facility is set to open sometime this month.

Cratis said it is set to be the only Tier III-certified data center in Croatia, with the site currently undergoing testing. However, at least three other data centers – from A1, Apsis IT, and Hrvatski Telekom – are listed with Tier III awards on Uptime’s awards page for Croatia.

"The first phase of the project was valued at €17 million ($18m), and it has been funded through our own resources and a loan, without any subsidies," a company spokesperson stated in an email to SeeNews.

Muraplast is a minority investor in the project. A brochure for the facility suggests land is available to expand with a second building.

PBZ bank provided a loan for the project.

“We are pleased to be part of an important infrastructure project for digital transformation, which is one of the main priorities of the European Union,” PBZ previously said.

Founded in 2014, Cratis offers managed Internet, cloud, and cybersecurity services. The company operates out of Digital Realty and Databox facilities in Zagreb and a Hrvatski Telekom facility in Varazdin, as well as another data center in Zurich, Switzerland.

Digital Realty recently announced plans for a 30MW data center campus in Zagreb. A1 opened a facility in the capital in late 2021.
