DataBank has expanded its Salt Lake City data center with a new data hall and announced aims for a seventh facility in the city.

The company this week opened the third data hall at its SLC5 data center, located on the company’s Granite Point North campus complex in Bluffdale, Utah.

DataBank’s SLC5 facility was designed to accommodate a total of five data halls, each providing 10,000 square feet (900 sqm) of raised floor and 2MW. The opening of the third hall takes SLC5’s current capacity to 30,000 sq ft (2,790 sq m) of raised flooring and 6MW of critical IT load.

The company said the remaining two data halls are already in the process of being built out for new customers.

DataBank opened SLC5 in July 2020, upon which CEO Raul K. Martynek said plans were already being drawn up for SLC6. With this latest expansion, the company has revealed intentions to build a seventh facility in the city.

“This kind of growth in the area is driving the need for colocation, connectivity, and cloud services, making Salt Lake City a prime location for enterprise-class data centers,” said Danny Allen, DataBank vice president of engineering.

“Unrelenting customer demand is what has led us to continue to add capacity to SLC5 as well as begin planning for SLC6 and SLC7.”

Earlier this year DataBank, which is owned by Colony Capital's Digital Colony fund, completed its acquisition of zColo and then raised $758 million through secured data center revenue notes to fund further acquisitions, expansions, and new builds.

The company also recently announced it was adding 6,500 sq ft of raised floor space and 1MW to its IND1 facility in Indianapolis, Indiana.
