DataBank is expanding one of its data centers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Announced this week, the expansion to MSP3 will add 15,000 square feet (1,400 sqm) of raised floor space and 4.5MW of capacity. The addition is expected to be completed by Q2 2024.

Located at 8111 Oxbow Creek North on the company’s 14-acre Brooklyn Park Campus, the facility is one of DataBank's four Minneapolis data centers.

After breaking ground in November 2020, DataBank opened the facility in November 2021. At launch, the facility offered 1.5MW of critical load power capacity and can scale to 3MW in the first data hall, with a total of 9MW of critical IT load across three data halls.

“MSP3 is expanding to meet the growing demand in the Minneapolis area for high-density racks that can deliver the necessary power and cooling for high-performance computing,” said DataBank VP of construction, Tony Qorri. “We are in a prime position to support the region’s strong scientific research, healthcare, and financial sectors in helping them analyze data to uncover new insights that can lead to innovative services for their customers.”

The MSP3 facility is the first phase of development on the 14 acres of land that DataBank purchased in 2020 from Scannell Properties; the campus can provide another 170,000 sq ft (15,800 sqm) of data center space and up to an additional 18MW.

MSP1 and MSP2, located in the Edina and Eagan areas of Minneapolis respectively, provide a combined 106,000 sqft of space (9,850 sqm, though mostly at MSP2). MSP4 – formerly a zColo facility – offers 4,500 sq ft (418 sqm) and 2MW at the 511 Building carrier hotel.

DataBank recently announced the completion of seven expansions across its US portfolio, and has subsequently announced plans to expand its DFW3 facility in Dallas, Texas, and its SL6 facility in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This week saw the company acquire 95 acres of land near Lithia Springs in Atlanta, Georgia, on which it plans to develop a two-building campus spanning 1 million sq ft and 120MW.
