Details of Google’s planned Proa cable have been shared.

First shared in April, the cable is set to connect Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) with Japan.

Industry observer Philippe Devaux said in a LinkedIn post that Google, operating under the name Starfish Infrastructure, will begin construction of the Proa system in July 2025.

The system is set to be operational in Q1 2026.

According to the cable license application filed earlier this month, each segment of the Proa cable will have 16 fiber pairs with a minimum design capacity of 25Tbps.

The cable will be built in three segments. The first segment connects Shima, Japan, to a branching unit in the Philippine Sea. The second and third will connect the branching unit to Tanguisson in Guam and Tinian in the Marianas.

The Proa subsea system is named after a type of traditional sailing canoe from the CNMI.

According to Submarine Cable Networks, 11 other cables land in Guam including the Atisa, AAG, AJC, JGA-N, and Tata TGN-Pacific.

The Northern Mariana Islands are home to the Atisa and Mariana-Guam cables.

To increase resilience in the area, another cable currently under development by NEC for Google, the Taiwan-Philippines-US (TPU) cable, is also set to get an extension to the CNMI. It will also connect to Taiwan, the Philippines, Guam, and the US, and is set to go live in 2025.
