Digi Communications' Portuguese subsidiary has agreed to purchase Nowo for €150 million ($164m).

The Romanian company announced the agreement last week, confirming that a deal will see it take 100 percent of shares owned by Cabonitel, the owner of mobile and fixed operator Nowo.

The announcement comes a month after Portugal's regulator AdC blocked Vodafone's proposed acquisition of Nowo.

Following an in-depth investigation, AdC said that a deal would hurt competition and harm consumers.

The AdC will also scrutinize Digi's proposed buyout of Nowo.

Nowo is Portugal's fourth biggest mobile and fixed telecom carrier, with around 270,000 telephony customers and 130,000 fixed subscribers.

The company holds spectrum licenses in 1800MHz, 2600MHz, and 3600MHz frequency bands.

Digi operates in its home market Romania, plus Spain, where it has built its customer base to more than six million customers, despite operating as an MVNO.

The operator will become Spain's fourth mobile operator, after it acquired spectrum assets from MásMóvil last year, allowing MásMóvil to merge with Orange.

The company also has an existing presence in Portugal, Belgium, and Italy.
