US utility Dominion Energy is exploring the possibility of connecting a data center directly to a nuclear plant in Connecticut, the company said.

CEO Robert Blue said on the company's latest earnings call that Dominion was "certainly open to the idea of a colocated data center" next to the Millstone Power Station in Waterford.

He added: “We continue to explore that option. We do clearly realize any colocation option is going to have to make sense for us, our potential counterparty, and stakeholders in Connecticut."

The comments come after Amazon Web Services (AWS) in March acquired Talen Energy's data center next to its Pennsylvania nuclear power station.

AWS spent $650 million to pick up the Cumulus data center campus, which was originally set to consume 960MW. The cloud company now plans to construct 15 data center buildings over the course of the next decade.

The Millstone Nuclear Power Plant has a nameplate capacity of 2098MW, but 55 percent of its output is assigned under a fixed-price contract through late 2029.

Dominion is “actively working with multiple parties to find the best value for Millstone” when the current power purchase agreement expires, Blue said.
