Equinix has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to procure part of the output of a Swedish wind farm.

The company this week announced it had signed a PPA with Neoen that will add 15MW of wind generation capacity to the local grid.

The colo firm will procure part of the output of the Storbrännkullen Wind Farm, located in the municipalities of Ragunda and Sollefteå. The contract will begin in mid-2024.

Sami Holopainen, acting managing director for Sweden at Equinix, said: “This contract facilitates the development and operations of a new wind project which will contribute towards Equinix’s renewable goals while also helping further deployment of renewables in Sweden and bring benefits to the local community.”

Equinix currently operates three Swedish data centers in Stockholm. All three were taken over as part of the company’s acquisition of Telecity in 2016.

Construction on the 57.4MW Storbrännkullen farm began in July 2022. The site is Neoen’s first in Sweden and comprises ten Nordex N163 turbines.

Christophe Desplats-Redier, regional director of Neoen in Europe, added: “We would like to thank Equinix for their continued trust: it highlights our ability to support companies in their decarbonization strategies. This is our 12th PPA in the Nordics and the fourth signed with Equinix for a total capacity of 157MW.

"We are also thrilled to be contributing to Sweden’s energy independence and carbon neutrality by adding new renewable plants. With our growing local team, we will further accelerate our development in this country.”

Equinix and Neoen have previously signed three wind PPAs in Finland. This is Equinix’s first contract with Neoen in Sweden, and the companies said they plan to sign more agreements in the country going forward.

2023 has seen Equinix sign a 225MW PPA in Spain with IGNIS, as well as its third PPA in Finland with Neoen, and its first in Portugal with Sonnedix.
