Local telco Gibfibre has launched a new data center in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.

“Introducing our purpose-built, state-of-the-art data center – Now open and ready for business! Our competitive pricing plans provide maximum value without compromising on quality or reliability,” the company said earlier this month.

Details weren’t shared, but GBC reports the facility is located in the New Harbours area of Gibraltar.

A sales brochure from the company says the site has capacity for 30 racks across two contained hot aisles – offering densities of 2.5kW or 5kW per rack. The site is reportedly built to Tier III standards, with an N+1 cooling system as well as 2N UPS and generator systems.

The company said 15 racks are currently used by the company and the rest are being offered to customers.

Gibfibre has been involved in an ongoing legal dispute with state-owned telco Gibtelecom over access to the latter’s data center in Mount Pleasant.

Gibfibre had reportedly hoped to secure a deal for access to the data center to connect directly via fiber to customers within the facility. A similar deal had reportedly been made with Sapphire Networks, but Gibtelecom reportedly refused to engage with Gibfibre on a deal.

The issue was taken to the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority in 2017, and then to the courts, with Gibfibre saying Gibtelecom is breaking competition laws. The case is still ongoing, and a ruling on the dispute is due to be published soon.

The company told GBC the new data center was planned separately from its ongoing issues with Gibtelecom.

“We took the decision around three years ago to build our own purpose-built, state-of-the-art data center facility,” said Julian Sheriff, Gibfibre head of operations. “The reasoning for that was we needed to expand our infrastructure. And by housing our infrastructure in this new facility, we’re more resilient and able to offer a better service to our customers.”

Gibfibre was founded in 2015 by the local Sheriff Group of Companies.
