Google plans to spend $1 billion on cloud and data center infrastructure in Thailand.

The company will develop facilities in the capital city of Bangkok and the nearby coastal province of Chonburi. This, it claims, will lead to 14,000 jobs being created and add $4bn to the nation's GDP.

Google has yet to disclose specific details about the data centers or their locations, but will spend the $1bn from 2025 to 2029. The company first announced that it would build a region in Thailand back in 2022.

"Thailand is fast becoming a digital hub in Southeast Asia, propelled by a talented workforce and investments in technology infrastructure from industry leaders like Google," Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, said.

"Google's investment in its data center and cloud region in Chonburi and Bangkok, respectively, coupled with growing Thai expertise in cloud computing and AI, are perfectly aligned with our national Cloud First Policy."

As part of the project, Google will work with Gulf Edge to create a sovereign cloud offering in Thailand.

The facilities will join existing Google Cloud regions in Singapore; Jakarta, Indonesia; Hong Kong; Taiwan; Seoul, South Korea; and Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.

Rival Amazon Web Services plans to launch a cloud region in Thailand in early 2025, and invest $5 billion by 2037.

Microsoft also plans to build a data center region in the country.

Despite the three hyperscaler commitments, Malaysia's Johor and Indonesia's Jakarta continue to be the focus of AI and cloud data center build out in the APAC region.
