Google confirmed it was behind the data center development project in February this year. The company will be partnering up with the Dorchester County Economic Development Office for the build.

The Dorchester City Council voted to change the site’s zoning in early February.

DCD previously reported that Google aims to invest $510 million into the 231-acre site. Other campus specifications or project timelines have not been shared, but are expected to be announced at the groundbreaking.

Google currently operates a South Carolina data center campus in Moncks Corner, around 20 miles east of Ridgeville. The site has been criticized for its water usage, with the Coastal Conversation League asking the state in 2019 to decline any requests for increased water usage until further testing could be performed.

According to Google’s 2024 environmental report, the data center used 763.4 million gallons of water in 2023 and withdrew 847.2.

The company recently acquired another 140 acres in the area.
